| GB ENGINEERING SELECTS EUROPAC FOR MEASURING ARM |
An order for a Series 3000iTM CimCore portable measuring arm worth £34,000 was won by EuroPac Metrology of Crewe from subcontract toolmaker GB Engineering of Nantwich following a detailed investigation into capabilities of other measuring arms exhibited at the Inspex 2004 exhibition, NEC Birmingham.
Geoff Berrisford, managing director, GB Engineering chose the CimCore arm after closely checking out competing products at the show. As he confirmed: "We were looking for versatility and mobility and the CimCore won hands down with its large three metre measuring volume which will allow us to measure not only individual machined components but also fixtures and tooling in situ without having to break the machine down.”
Portable measuring arm technology has been seen as an important facility to GB Engineering because of the added advantage of its capability to measure off-site and even at customers' premises.
With nine employees and 15 years in the business, GB Engineering's customer base has grown to be 80 per cent motor industry-based largely taking up the manufacture of engine components for major automotive companies. The other 20 per cent is generated through autograss racing. Here, GB Engineering has become one of the leading manufacturers of specials for 'open wheel' cars and not only constructs its own cars but also supplies core components to other manufacturers.
The CimCore portable arm with a measuring range between 1.2 and 3.6 metres has gained a reputation for being the most accurate of its type currently available for inspection and reverse engineering of fixtures, fabricated parts, models, machined parts and moulds. It uses carbon fibre technology to provide an inert, high strength but lightweight construction.
Accuracy of the 3000i version is claimed within +/- 0.005 mm and quick on-the-fly changing between infrared, tube, non-contact and conventional probes without re-calibration is an important feature. Also, the arm features an easily removable counterbalance that offsets the weight of the arm to reduce operator fatigue, but also allows the arm to be mounted horizontally, vertically or upside down without any need for re-calibration.
At GB Engineering, the CimCore arm will also be used to measure 3-D surfaces, gravity fed and injection moulded parts, assembly and setting fixtures and for reverse engineering data capture.
